Support Each Other, Stay Together, and Work Legally in Canada
The Spouse Open Work Permit (SOWP) is a unique immigration option that allows the spouse or common-law partner of certain temporary residents in Canada to work full-time for any employer across the country – with no job offer required in advance.
This permit is βopen,β meaning your spouse can:
β Work for any employer in most industries
β Change jobs or employers without needing a new work permit
β Gain valuable Canadian work experience that may count toward permanent residency (PR)
This pathway is perfect for families who want to stay together while one partner studies or works in CanadaΒ – promoting family unity, financial support, and immigration readiness.
Your spouse or common-law partner may be eligible if you are:
β An International Student (with a valid Study Permit)
– Studying full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in a post-secondary program
– Program must be at least 8 months long and lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate
β A Skilled Worker in Canada (with a valid Work Permit)
– Working in a TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 occupation (previously NOC 0, A, or B)
– Holding an employer-specific or open work permit in a skilled occupation
β A Permanent Resident Applicant
– Your spouse may qualify for an open work permit while awaiting PR approval under the Inland Spousal Sponsorship program
β No job offer required β your spouse can start working after arrival
β Open to all industries and employers
β Work experience counts toward PR pathways like Canadian Experience Class
β Keeps families together during studies or temporary employment
β Can be applied for from inside or outside Canada, depending on your situation
